For many of us, blindness or vision impairment isn’t our only diagnosis. Often an additional disability or medical condition presents a variety of different challenges, which can have unpredictable impacts on the way we live with blindness.
During our 2019 National Convention, Steve Richardson moderated a panel on the topic, and it was clear that there was much more to be said than could fit in a one-hour session.
We recognised the need for a space for those of us who are blind or vision impaired and have an additional disability or medical condition. As a result, the Multiple Disability email list was created.
The email list allows for general discussion around anything that relates to being blind or vision impaired and having an additional disability or medical condition. If you’d like to join in the conversation, you can contact BCA on 1800 033 660, or email bca@bca.org.au.
In recognition of the many people who are blind or vision impaired and have an additional disability or medical condition, New Horizons ran a series on people with multiple disabilities earlier this year. The series, spanning episodes 638 to 643, featured BCA members talking about how conditions like hearing impairment and brittle bones change the way their blindness impacts on them, as well as how they are perceived within our community, and society generally.
