BCA Updates

Update from the CEO

Dear members,

As we move through April, I’d like to take a moment to wish you and your loved ones a very happy Easter. With the holiday approaching, a few of our team members, including myself, will be taking some time away next week. We appreciate your understanding and patience as our availability may be reduced during this period.

This week, the Disability Discrimination Commissioner Roundtable took place. The discussion centered on the complexities of intersectionality within the context of disability rights, with a particular focus on the implications for policy reform and advocacy. Commissioner Rosemary Kayess emphasised the significance of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) in recognising the multifaceted identities of individuals with disabilities and the compounded discrimination they face.  The conversation highlighted the necessity of integrating disability issues into broader policy frameworks through a human rights lens, addressing how various social categories influence discrimination and the need for systemic transformation to ensure equal rights.

During the Disability Representative and Carer Organisations (DRCOs) information session, we explored the new and upcoming rules currently in development, including where they sit within the NDIS legislation and how they align with different stages of a participant’s experience with the scheme – from initial access and assessment, through planning and support, all the way to review.

Looking ahead, I want to remind everyone that our 50th Anniversary Convention is only two months away. We will be gathering from Friday, 13th to Sunday, 15th June at the Novotel Melbourne Glen Waverley. If you haven’t registered yet, we encourage you to do so.To secure a ticket, visit our Humanitix event page.

For those attending for the first time, we’ll be running our Buddy Program again this year. It’s a great way to meet new people and feel more connected throughout the weekend.

National Care & Support Sector Conference

Friday, 25th July at the State Reception Centre, 60 Fraser Avenue Kings Park, WA.

This year’s theme, “Bringing Together Sectors, Inspiring Change,” reflects our commitment to fostering collaboration across these essential sectors. As each area undergoes significant reforms, the need for shared insights, collective action, and innovative solutions has never been greater. This conference will focus on advancing a unified vision for a high-quality, sustainable care and support system that serves all Australians.

We are excited to invite you to the National Care and Support Sector Conference, a pivotal event that brings together five key care sectors – Disability, Aged Care, Mental Health, Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC), and Veterans’ Care. This conference will serve as a national platform for discussing the shared challenges and opportunities across these rapidly reforming sectors.

In light of significant ongoing reforms in these sectors, the National Care and Support Sector Conference will steward a national conversation that underpins the future of Australia’s care and support economy. Our aim is to explore the commonalities across these sectors, share learnings, and identify opportunities for providers to diversify their services.

For more information and to register visit the event page.
